Behind the Seams: Meet the Digital Fabrics Team Creating Your Australian Made Textile Goods

We’re super proud to be an Australian small business that loves to support the local creative industries here from our HQ in Sydney’s Marrickville. This year, for Australian Made Week, we want to celebrate our incredible team who make the magic happen when you place an order for any of our Australian-made textile goods (or print fabric online!).

What is Australian Made Week?

Before we get stuck in, you might be wondering what Australian Made Week is? We’re proud to be certified Australian Made for all our ready-to-print textile goods. That’s Australian made custom printed scarves, cushion covers, tea towels and so much more! Australian Made Week is a moment for us to celebrate all the incredible makers, creatives and more that go into producing Australian made products across the nation!

Digital Fabrics – The team behind the scenes

At Digital Fabrics, our tightly woven team is at the heart of everything we do, from printing your design onto fabric ready for cutting, right through to sewing your labels into the finished custom textile products.

Every order that leaves our studio has passed through the hands of a team who genuinely cares. That’s the beauty of buying Australian-made products – you’re not just buying an item, you’re supporting a community of local skilled creatives who pour pride and precision into their craft.

Meet the team

Kon is our print operator –  a quiet legend who has also never missed a day of work (seriously impressive!) He’s made it clear: Digital Fabrics will be his final workplace before retirement and we’re beyond lucky to have him.

Ella, our brilliant production coordinator, began as an intern and is now an absolute powerhouse keeping the Digital Fabrics show running smoothly. Whether it’s solving shipping puzzles or helping customers with design queries, she runs the show with a calm confidence that puts all our customers at ease.

Here since Day One, Barbara has returned to Digital Fabrics after a short break to become a mum. We treasure her deep experience and love having her back!

Thi (pronounced ‘T’), our sewing superstar, is a force of nature. With decades of sewing experience, her energy is unmatched. We live in awe of T’s ability to sew… and her stamina, it’s so impressive!

Yu Zhi (‘Z’) is our newest team member! She works alongside Thi to carefully handstich all your beautiful Australian-made products to help make your creative vision a reality.

Zhiwei is currently studying at uni, but helps the team when she’s on a break. We love that she’s carrying on a beautiful connection — her mum used to sew for Digital Fabrics!

Maria is the Director of Digital Fabrics. A creative powerhouse and textile design mastermind, but above all else a kind-hearted soul who makes Digital Fabrics a place that the team just l-o-v-e to work at. We know, that sounds very cliched to say, but most of our team have been here for years and they’ve even come back!

Together, these legends embody what we love most about Australian Made production and small businesses: authenticity, integrity, and a whole lot of heart.

How to Use Our New Online Uploaders to Create Digital Fabrics Online

How to create your own fabric. How to print your own fabric.

Effortless custom fabric & product creation with our new uploaders

At Digital Fabrics, we’re always looking for ways to make custom fabric printing easier, faster, and more intuitive. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our new and improved fabric and product uploaders, designed to streamline the process of creating your own custom fabric printing projects.

It’s now super-easy to order custom fabric for your next sewing project or design bespoke homewares or gifts such as custom printed tea towels, custom printed cushion covers or personalised textile products.

The best thing? You can now order custom fabric online whenever you like using our new uploaders via our website… even in the middle of the night!

Here’s everything you need to know about using our new uploaders to bring your digital fabric designs to life!

What’s new? Introducing product uploaders

Until now our website only allowed you to upload and order custom-printed fabric. Now, we’ve expanded our offering with product uploaders for some of the most popular items in our range of ready-to-print homeware and fashion items, including:

No waiting to contact us to place your order. Just hop onto the website and place your order yourself!

How to use our uploaders for digital fabric printing

Watch the video to see how easy-to-use our new fabric uploader or read on to get step-by-step instructions. You’ll be able to order custom fabric online faster than you can drink your morning coffee.

Before you get started, make sure you have your digital design file ready to upload. Currently we only support JPG and PNG file formats.

Not sure how to do this? Read our handy help guide here.

How to order custom fabric online

1. Upload your file

On the left hand side of the uploader you’ll see the action menu. From here you can click the button to upload your file. P.S. The first step of creating custom fabric or textile products using our uploaders is the same.

2. Check your file size

Ideally you want your uploaded file to be between 150 to 300 DPI, this ensures the best quality outcome. Double-check your file dimensions in cm, not just pixels! At the end of the day, you’ll receive a physical fabric or product, which will be measured in real-world dimensions—not pixels!

3. Select your fabric

Once your file is uploaded, select your desired fabric type and choose what you want to print (Linear Meter or Strike-Off). Unsure what fabric you need for your project? Read this handy guide.

Pro Tip: we highly recommend ordering a ‘strike-off’ before ordering meters of fabric.

What is a strike off? If you’re unfamiliar with fabric printing, a strike off is a small sample piece of fabric (20 x 20 cm) that is printed using your exact design on the specific fabric base you have chosen. This is important because colours will always appear slightly differently from one fabric to the next. Printing off a strike off will ensure you can colour match your design before printing meters and ensure you’re 110% happy with your final product.

4. Choose your pattern repeat

Adjust your design using the real-time preview on the right hand side of the uploader and select the most appropriate pattern repeat.

  • Full Drop: the image will be printed repeating across the width and the required length of the fabric.
  • Half-Drop: each row is offset for a dynamic effect.
  • Centre: the image will be printed in its entirety without repetition.
  • Mirror: the design is flipped to create a mirrored effect (Note: this doesn’t preview correctly on all products but will print as expected).

5. Place your order

Once you’re happy with the preview you can order your custom fabric by adjusting the number of meters of fabric you’re ordering. If you’re ordering a Strike-Off, you can select how many Strike-Offs you’d like us to print. The more fabric you order, the lower the cost per meter.

Then, simply add to cart and proceed to the checkout.

Shipping costs are calculated at the checkout when you provide your delivery details.

Why use our new uploaders?

5 creative ways to use custom printed tea towels

Creative ways to use tea towels- Print your own custom tea towels

When you think of a tea towel you’re probably transported straight to the kitchen, but we have news for you! There are many creative ways to use custom printed tea towels in your home and business.

To help you share our vision we’ve collated five of our favourite ways to take this humble kitchen stalwart away from the dishrack and out into the wider world. We’re talking impressive corporate or business gifting, standout events and achingly on-trend home decor.

Already sold? Click here to visit our new Tea Towel Uploader and create your own custom printed tea towels in minutes with Digital Fabrics.

1. Custom printed tea towels as textile wall art

Textile wall hangings are a must-have for current interior design trends and an easy way to create home decor that feels luxe without breaking the bank. Simply stretch the teatowel over a canvas frame or hang proudly with a magnetic clip frame.

If you’re a creative designer or illustrator who usually sells works on paper, perhaps it’s time you tried out a custom printed tea towel featuring your most popular artwork to diversify your products and add a new range to your collection.

Interior designers, rejoice! Our tea towel uploader makes it oh-so easy to create indulgent textile wall art to elevate your designs in minutes. No more scouring suppliers for that perfect print, just upload your own and we’ll create it for you (in our Sydney studio).

Personally? We love printing a variety of custom tea towel designs that then allow us to effortlessly rotate our wall art throughout the year. Think Christmas-themed tea towels in December and bold blooms for Spring.

2. Market your brand with unique merch or packaging

For small businesses, custom printed tea towels offer an easy way to create branded and functional merchandise.  Unlike traditional promo items (hello boring pens and mugs) tea towels are stylish, useful, and often kept for years.

By far one of our favourite ways to use tea towels in an unexpected way is as product packaging. Imagine the WOW-factor of wrapping your gourmet food products or a bottle of wine in a tea towel. It’s a marketing move that not only looks premium but also keeps your brand in front of customers long after the purchase has been consumed.

3. Wrap gifts in a more sustainable way

Not a small business? Don’t need merch? Have you ever considered using textiles to wrap your gifts?

Known as Furoshiki in Japan, fabric gift wrapping is a growing trend, and custom printed tea towels make it even more special.

Picture this: on mother’s day mum unwraps a bottle of her fave wine, olive oil or perfume wrapped in a beautifully decorated tea towel featuring artwork designed by her own family. How special!

4. Update your table styling with custom printed tea towels

Why stick to traditional napkins when you can use beautifully designed custom tea towels instead? Their larger size makes them perfect for rustic, layered table settings, and they add a touch of personality to any dining setup.

If you’re an event planner, wedding stylist or simply someone who just loves to host the most incredible dinner parties a custom printed tea towel is a unique way to invite your guests or elevate your table styling with a seriously luxe feel.

Our easy-to-use tea towel uploader tool will help you create a custom printed tea towel in minutes, enabling you to move onto planning the more intricate details of your event.

Fold them into elegant napkins or drape them as placemats. What’s more, your guests can take these beautifully considered styling elements away as a keepsake of your event.

5. Create limited-edition collectibles & fundraising items

Custom printed tea towels aren’t just practical—they can also be a fantastic way to raise funds, commemorate special occasions, or create limited-edition collectible items.

A beautifully designed tea towel featuring hand-drawn artwork, a team or class photo or signatures or a meaningful design can become a cherished keepsake while also serving as a high-impact fundraising product. They’re lightweight, easy to sell, and have a much higher ‘keepsake value’ than traditional fundraising items.

Brands and creatives, we’ve got you too! Launching a limited-edition tea towel collection can help generate excitement and exclusivity. Seasonal runs, artist collaborations, or milestone-themed designs (like ‘10 years in business’ commemorative prints) make for a great product option that customers will actually want to buy and keep.

Ready to think beyond the kitchen?

Custom printed tea towels are more than just a kitchen essential—they’re a blank canvas for creativity. Whether you’re styling your home, wrapping gifts, or using them to market your brand, there’s no shortage of ways to put them to use. If you’re still stuck for ideas, ask us for inspiration!

Digital Fabrics are a Sydney-based business obsessed with bringing the very best custom printed textile products to life. Whether you need a one-off special gift or a bulk order for your business, we make sure it’s easy to create beautiful, custom tea towels right here in Australia.

How Custom Fabric Printing Works: Design Your Own Fabric Online

Curious about how custom fabric printing works? Whether you’re looking to design your own fabric for fashion, your latest DIY project or personalised interior decor – it’s easier than you think! Read our step-by-step guide that will explain how to print your own custom fabric – from your idea through to receiving your very own printed fabric.

design your own fabric -custom fabric with Digital Fabrics

Step 1: Inspiration and Designing
The journey to print your own custom fabric begins with your creative vision. Maybe you’ve sketched out a pattern, found a colour palette you love, or even have a unique graphic you want to turn into fabric. Whatever your starting point, your creativity is the foundation of the project.

Creating a print-ready artwork file for fabric printing is a relatively simple process, but there are some key steps to follow to ensure that your design turns out perfectly when printed on fabric.

  1. Choose software: we recommend using design software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
  2. Artwork repeat: there are many different ways that you can create a repeating design. Some popular choices are full drop, half drop and mirror. You can also create your design as a placement prints!
  3. Resolution: we recommend using 150- 300 DPI for high-quality prints. (keep in mind that the lower the DPI, the lower the quality of your design)
  4. Save your design: save in formats like JPG or PNG depending on your design type and ordering method.

For more information on our artwork file requirements, check out our Artwork Requirements & Setup page online. There you can learn how to make your print-ready artwork file correctly. designs are set up just how they need to be!

Step 2: Choosing the right fabric for your custom fabric printing project

Custom fabric printing isn’t “one-size-fits-all.” Different projects call for different materials—whether you’re designing a cosy pillow cover, a bold fashion statement, or a special event banner. You should choose a fabric type that works for your design’s purpose. We offer a wide variety of fabric bases for all your custom fabric printing needs:

  • Cotton Poplin, Poppy, Aerocorp: soft and breathable—great for apparel and accessories.
  • Waratah, Oxford, Cooper: sturdy and durable—perfect for bags, upholstery, and heavy-duty projects.
  • Luna, Dilly: ideal for high-gloss or vibrant prints, often used in fashion or decor.
  • Cotton Linen, Cotton Drill: highly absorbent and durable for tea towels and table linen.
  • Eco Vesna Lycra: even four-way stretch, wicking properties, chlorine rating of 4-5 + a UPF rating of 50 – the best choice for swimwear and activewear.

When you print fabric online with Digital Fabrics, we offer a variety of fabric print base options to perfectly match your design. Check out our full range of fabric print bases.

Meet the Designer – Meredith Gain

Next up as our featured artist in The Designer Project is the ultra-talented Meredith Gain from MGK Designs – with her textile collection ‘Beach Days‘!

She has put together the most wonderful blog post, diving deep into her creative process and inspirations for creating these amazing designs. Keep on read to find out more!

Meredith Gain

“Hi there

I’m Meredith Gain of MGK Designs and I’d like to share my inspiration and design journey for my fabric collection Beach Days that I’m so excited and proud to have available via Digital Fabrics and The Designer Project. I grew up in the carefree beachside suburb of Nth Curl Curl on the northern beaches NSW in the 70s where I spent my time swimming in the surf, exploring the rocks and generally having fun in the sun! My journey into surface pattern/textile design came about from my love of design and always the need to be creating! Prior to finding my way to textile design – after I had my 2 kiddos – I was creating delicious food as a chef for over 15years before I had my family and moved back to the beach for that carefree lifestyle I had growing up!

Creative Space

I now spend my days creating art for fabric, actually any surface that needs a design! And of course, I still love cooking! And always with music playing! I pursued my love of art and design via a surface design course at ISCD and won several awards at the time … This led to an opportunity to design a wallpaper and interior fabric range for Emily Ziz .. I now have 3 collections with them.  Alongside my interior fabric collections, I also continue to create for several print studios for swimwear and women’s wear … and even have a few rugs and carpet designs! I am happy to create and adapt my style to many different briefs and clients, but my natural handwriting lends itself to an organic abstract very textural coastal vibe. I love to walk the many bush tracks and coastal paths of sunny Sydney; in fact, any coastline will do !

Peach Breeze in the making

I gain so much inspiration and joy from the surrounding nature and I find this comes out in my art via the mark making and line work that makes up much of my artworks. The designs I have available here for Digital Fabrics are in a lovely warm palette of pinks, peaches and oranges, reminiscent of a sunrise and the happy rosy glow after a day spent by the beach; with sunscreen, sunglasses and hat on of course!! I work mainly on my iPad in Procreate to experiment & muck around.Working with layers and effects that I then upload straight to my mac to work on further to put into repeat and play with colours. It’s usually straight to Illustrator and sometimes Photoshop but I’m definitely team Ai !

Iceream Trek Original Art

Each design usually starts with a mark making frenzy when something inspires me. Again, mainly on the iPad but sometimes I like to spend a day and get the paints out to do a big batch of swirls, marks, shapes and lines that get used in my designs. Though I even recently did a piece using the only material I had on hand…a lipstick and a notepad!! I then take photos of the mark makings and digitise using image trace in Ai. This is where I like to play around with layers, textures, colour and scale. As it helps to visualise the end product, I like mockups to see how the designs might look on a skirt or swimwear. The colours are generally depending on if I have a brief or what I’ve recently seen that inspires me. On a recent girls trip away to Daylesford VIC I was so inspired by the scenery and the colours that I just had to create a mood board! It actually inspired the design SAND DRIFTS…even though I’ve changed up the colours for this collection!

Lipstick Art

My work is always evolving!

You can find my latest works in progress or my ‘just because I’m feeling it art’ on instagram @mgkdesigns and my website https://www.mgk-designs.com/

Beach Days is a collection of organic, abstract, all-over patterns; inspired by coastal walks by the beach. Many things inspire and remind Meredith of her childhood, spent living by the beach: bark on the trees, bird footprints in the sand, coastal bushes, sand hills, beach debris and lazy summer days! These designs would be great for any number of applications such as sundresses, swimwear, cushions, beanbags, tablecloths & napkins, tea towels, scarves, sarongs and beach towels! Each of Meredith’s designs are available to be printed onto any of our stock fabrics. Simply head to our Fabric Shop online to view the whole collection and choose your favourite fabric!

Trending: Textile Wedding Decor

One of the hottest new trends in wedding styling is textile decor and here at Digital Fabrics we make it even easier to incorporate personalised textile elements to your wedding day styling with low minimum order quantities and hands-on support to bring your vision to life.

Textile wedding decor instantly adds a next-level luxe feel to your Big Day, making it effortless to weave your chosen colour palette through your ceremony or reception venue and add little pops of unexpected surprise and delight for your guests. Let us explain three easy ways to incorporate fabric decor into your wedding.

Wedding Signage

Personalised printed textile banners and signage can add an unexpected touch of wow to your nuptials. We love seeing couples incorporate textile wedding signage into their scheme as they can soften hard or brutalist architectural venues (think big stone buildings or industrial warehouse spaces). What’s more, a fabric banner or sign can effortlessly command attention in a large-scale space. Consider printing your seating chart onto fabric, your wedding day order of events onto fabric or your bar menu onto a textile hanging. Whether it’s gently fluttering in the breeze in an outdoor venue or creating a striking divide between interior spaces – you won’t be disappointed with your guests’ reactions.

Table Decor

Ok, you might be thinking table decor, that’s obvious, but hear us out. The majority of wedding venues and stylists will hire their table decor – think napkins, table runners and tablecloths. Whilst they may stock luxurious linens, often getting the perfect colour isn’t very easy as you have to pick from the available stock. If you have a complex colour palette, a bold design or a specific shade in mind, printing your own wedding decor may provide an opportunity to add an unexpected twist.

We love printing personalised table decor for our customers. A great idea is printing personalised placemats or napkins that guests can then take home with them as an alternative wedding favour.

Stationery

We all know that first impressions count, so what could make a more striking impression than a beautifully printed textile-based invitation. We’ve loved seeing wedding stylists get creative and use fabric instead of paper for their couples’ invitations. It’s something that’ll get all your guests talking about your Big Day well in advance of the event.

Here at Digital Fabrics we stock a wide range of wedding-appropriate fabrics including luxe natural cotton linens, strong and durable cotton drill or canvas and floaty, romantic chiffons and lightweight weaves. Importantly, we can print in any colour you need – that means you can precisely match the pantone that you are trying to achieve. What’s more, you can help reduce the environmental impact of your event. All our fabric bases are sourced from sustainable and ethical suppliers and where possible we use recycled fabrics.
