Cushion Cover File Set Up Tutorial

Interested on how to make your custom cushions?

Here are some helpful steps on how to set up your artwork ready to print with us.

You can print custom cushions from any type of design photographic, hand drawn/painted, created in Photoshop or Illustrator, the possibilities are endless! Any size, any shape, front and back or just front panels of cushions.

For this how-to we chose to paint beautiful Orchids in watercolour. Once painting is finished and dry we digitized the artwork by scanning it at high dpi of 300, artwork also can be photographed.

After artwork is scanned and manipulated to desired colour and placement create a new canvas in RGB colour mode, 48 x 48 cm for finished size cushion cover of 45cm x 45cm including 1.5cm seam allowance on all sides of the cushion covers.

To help remember that there is seam allowance on the artwork put guidelines on all sides 1.5cm in (these guidelines won’t show when printed). Place an artwork on art board, play around with the placement until you get the look you are after and be mindful that anything outside of the guidelines will not be seen. We print digitally onto white fabric, for this specific cushion we wanted a white background so we left the background white, if you want a colour background you can do so by creating a new layer with the colour and placing it behind the artwork.

When you are happy with the results you can flatten your artwork and save, artwork can be saved as either a JPEG or TIFF.

Repeat these steps for the back of the cushion cover, if you want a certain colour for the back, drop in the colour you want into the layer.

September Dress

Print design by Liz Smith for her wedding dress, printed at Digital Fabrics.

If you’ve ever thought, nay, dreamt about your wedding, chances are that a lot of that time was spent imagining your perfect gown. Whether it was princess, modern, vintage, beaded, laced, tulled or none of the above, it was to be unique and yours alone. And Digital Fabrics made that once imagined dress a possibility this year when they printed a bespoke design for a custom wedding dress.

Developed from a photograph of hydrangea’s, and repeated along the border of the ivory duchess satin, the colour and effect could not have worked better on the day. The ombre purple and mauves were a great contrast to the earthiness of the bush surrounds and were a true reflection of the bride’s personality.

If you look to the meaning of flowers, hydrangeas (although there are conflicting ideas) are said to represent anything that is sincere and heartfelt, a particularly good thing to be announcing for a bride to her groom.

The team at Digital Fabrics not only printed the fabric but had some helpful input regarding colour and fabric which made the process almost seamless.

So for that totally unique print you’ve been dreaming about, give Digital Fabrics a call as our design and print solutions go all the way to the altar!

Capsule Range Winners

After some time deliberating over the beautiful print submissions we had to choose our winner and 2 runner ups. What we were looking for was a overall repeating print with unique elements that would translate well into their overall collection designs. Students quickly realised that when digitally printing even a pixel can make a difference, here are our winners.

The Winner is:

Sarah Smith

We chose Sarah Smith’s design as the winner for her unique hand drawn designs, inspired by the crusades.

1st Runner up is:

Malani Biasetto

We loved the collage of texture displayed on Malani Biasetto’s repeating print. We thought it was a great way to display an array of prints inspired by Morrocan tiles

2nd Runner up is:

Jacqueline Wong

Jacqueline Wongs repeat came in 2nd runner up for using an image of a shipwreck inspired by a nautical theme into a textured all over print.

Capsule Range competition

Along with our competition with TAFE we were also asked to contribute to the 2nd year Fashion Design capsule ranges.

We wanted students to build on their knowledge about printing and how to get a print to repeat. We gave students colour palettes to work with and asked that they design a repeat print to go with their collection. We received 22 submissions which we had the very difficult task of choosing the winner and 2 runners up. Here are the 22 designs, which are your favourites?
